Learning
Science
The study of Science helps students develop critical thinking, problem-solving and analytical skills, while fostering an understanding of the natural world and the scientific principles that shape everyday life. It also encourages curiosity, creativity, and innovation.
The Science curriculum at Pakenham Secondary College, aligned with the Victorian Curriculum, offers students opportunities to explore key scientific concepts, processes, and practices, while developing an understanding of science’s contribution to culture, society, and its impact on our daily lives.
Year 7 to 10 Science
In Years 7 to 10, students study a variety of scientific fields, including Biological, Chemical, Physical, and Earth and Space Sciences. They develop skills in questioning, predicting, planning and conducting investigations, processing data, analysing results, and communicating scientific ideas.
Year 9 Electives
In Year 9, students can choose from a variety of exciting electives, including:
-
Body and Mind: The Science of Biology and Psychology
-
STEAM Explorations
-
Sport Science
Year 10 Electives
Year 10 students have the opportunity to further explore specialised science fields through the following electives:
-
Science of Food (Gastronomy)
-
Science of Crime (Forensics)
-
Science of Life and Career

Engaging and Hands-On Learning in Science
Our Science classrooms are dynamic learning spaces where hands-on experiments, collaborative projects, and creative problem-solving are central. Students engage in activities like building circuits, observing chemical reactions, exploring genetics, and studying physics. Weekly experiments bring abstract theories to life, whether through launching homemade rockets to understand Newton's laws or creating models of DNA. These activities encourage students to ask questions, think critically, and test hypotheses.
Students can also extend their learning beyond the classroom, taking on challenges such as the Biomimicry Institute’s Youth Design Challenge, CSIRO’s CREST program, or courses like an astrophysics program through the John Monash Science School.

Excursions that Enhance Science Learning
Our excursions include visits to the Melbourne Zoo to study biodiversity and conservation, Scienceworks for interactive physics exhibits, and Melbourne University to explore higher education and cutting-edge research.
VCE Offerings
The VCE sciences offered at Pakenham Secondary College include Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Psychology.
Science Showcase
A highlight of the year is our Science Showcase, where students showcased their knowledge and skills by conducting engaging experiments and demonstrations for parents and teachers. From chemical reactions to physics-based projects, the event provides a platform for students to share their passion for science and turn the classroom into an interactive science fair.
