Through the study of English, students develop the skills to analyse, understand, communicate and build meaningful connections with others and the world around them. At Pakenham Secondary College, we inspire students to uncover deeper meanings in literature while critically engaging with global issues. By exploring the world from multiple perspectives, students are encouraged to refine their self-expression through articulate written and spoken communication.

English is a core subject for all students from Years 7 to 12, with each year focusing on essential skills such as creative and persuasive writing, text analysis and comparison, vocabulary development, and effective communication techniques.

To enrich learning, we offer author visits for students in Years 7 to 10. These sessions spark a love of reading, provide insight into the writing process, and deepen students’ appreciation of literature. For VCE students, Ross Huggard, a seasoned Year 12 English assessor, conducts tailored seminars to prepare students for assessments. With his extensive experience in teaching and authoring educational texts, Mr. Huggard provides invaluable guidance to students in their final years of English study.

At the senior level, we offer Units 1–4 of VCE English for VCE students and Literacy classes for those undertaking the VCE Vocational Major (VCE VM). VCE VM Literacy equips students with practical reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills for effective communication in various contexts, preparing them for future success in the workplace, further education, and personal growth. Our VCE English curriculum is carefully designed to enhance confidence in advanced text analysis and sophisticated communication, ensuring students are well-prepared for the VCAA exams.

We also provide English Literature from Years 9 to 12. In Years 9 and 10, students can choose Literature as a semester-long elective, which lays the foundation for senior-level study. Literature enhances critical thinking, analytical skills, and creativity, while promoting a deeper understanding of different cultures, perspectives, and historical contexts.

At Pakenham Secondary College, our English curriculum equips students to excel academically, think critically, and communicate confidently, setting them up for success in every aspect of life.

We are excited to share that our Pakenham Principal’s Powerboat 500 Reading Challenge is underway!

Running from 4 May to 28 August, this whole-school initiative invites all Year 7 and 8 students to set sail towards a shared goal of 500 minutes of reading, with rewards for both individual achievement and class participation. Students are also supported through dedicated reading time in English classes, helping them build consistency, confidence and a love of reading.

The challenge is being embraced across the College, with our Principal, Mr Smith, along with Assistant Principals Ms Logan, Ms Chandler and Ms Scheiwiller, also taking part - bringing a strong sense of connection and friendly competition to the experience.

Students can work through four achievement levels, with bonus challenges available along the way. Regular updates will be shared in the daily bulletin so progress can be tracked as the race unfolds.

For senior students in Years 9–12, there is also an opportunity to get involved by forming teams of four (mixed year levels welcome) and competing for the highest total reading time. Teams are encouraged to aim high as they compete not only against each other, but also against staff. A minimum of 500 minutes (6.5 hours) of fiction reading is required, with prizes awarded to top-performing teams. Audiobooks are not included in this challenge.

The focus is on reading for enjoyment, with fiction texts such as novels, memoirs and biographies encouraged.

Students interested in participating in the senior challenge should speak with or email Ms Nadal with their team members, class details and team name.
