PSC හි ක්‍රීඩාව

At Pakenham Secondary College, Visual Arts and Design give students the opportunity to explore creativity, build practical skills and express ideas visually.

Students are encouraged to experiment, take creative risks and develop their own artistic voice. Our programs are hands-on, engaging and connected to real-world creative industries, supporting students to build skills in communication, problem-solving and creative thinking.

For many students, Visual Arts also provides a positive creative outlet where they can explore interests, build confidence and enjoy the process of making and creating.

Studying Visual Arts can lead to a wide range of future pathways across design, media, marketing, architecture, digital technologies and other creative industries.

A rich and supportive Arts Program

Across Years 7-12, students can choose from a broad range of visual arts and design subjects, including:

  • Visual Arts (painting, drawing, sculpture and printmaking)

  • Digital Art and Design

  • Photography

  • Visual Communication Design (VCE)

  • Art Making and Exhibiting (VCE)

  • Creative and design-based technologies
     

Students are supported through gallery visits, artist workshops, exhibitions and opportunities to showcase their work to the wider community. These experiences help students build confidence, strengthen presentation skills and understand how creative work connects with audiences and communities.

Students in Years 7 and 8 can explore creative interests through our Passion Projects program, including:

  • Ceramics and

  • Photography

This hands-on program allows students to develop skills, try new things and build confidence in a supportive environment.

Passion Projects (Years 7-8)

Indigenous Artist-in-Residence Program

A key strength of our program is our ongoing partnership with Indigenous artist Sam Richards, a proud Wurundjeri and Dja Dja Wurrung artist.

Sam works with students across Years 7–12, sharing cultural knowledge and contemporary Indigenous art practices. Students create works inspired by Dreaming stories, Country and local landscapes, including weaving, sculpture, painting and mosaic installations displayed around the College.

Through this program, students:

  • Learn about Indigenous art practices and symbolism

  • Create artworks connected to storytelling and Country

  • Work with a practising contemporary artist

  • Contribute to artworks displayed within the College

Year 7-8 Art

Students explore drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, printmaking and digital art while learning how artists communicate ideas through visual language.

They study artworks from different cultures and time periods and begin developing confidence in their own creative expression. Across both years, students are encouraged to experiment, take risks and enjoy making art in a supportive environment.

Year 9-10 Art

Students build on their skills through drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking and mixed media.

They develop ideas through experimentation, visual journals, artist research and the creation of finished artworks. Students also participate in gallery visits, workshops and the College Art and Technology Exhibition.

This subject encourages creativity, independence and confidence in developing personal artistic ideas.

Year 9-10 Digital Art and Design

Students combine drawing skills with digital tools to explore contemporary design.

They work with animation, illustration, typography, branding and design thinking using industry software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Procreate and SketchUp, as well as emerging technologies.

Students learn how designers communicate ideas across advertising, media, gaming and product design.

Year 9-10 Photography

Students learn to capture and create strong visual images using professional camera equipment and editing software.

They explore lighting, composition, portraiture, visual storytelling and Photoshop editing while developing a photography folio.

This subject supports pathways into photography, media, journalism and creative industries.

VCE Pathways

VCE Art Making and Exhibiting

Students explore how artworks are made and how they are presented to audiences.

They develop their own artistic practice through hands-on making and inquiry-based learning. A key focus is visiting galleries and exhibitions to understand how artworks are curated and displayed.

Students study artists from local, national and international contexts.

Pathways include:

  • Fine arts and contemporary practice

  • Illustration and creative industries

  • Gallery and museum work

  • Arts education and community arts

  • Curatorial and exhibition practice​​

  • Photography and visual storytelling

VCE Visual Communication Design

Students learn how visual language is used to communicate ideas and solve design problems.

They create designs using both hand-drawn and digital methods across branding, environments, products and interactive media. Students also consider sustainability, ethics and cultural awareness in their work.

Through critique and discussion, students build confidence in presenting and refining ideas.

Pathways include:

  • Graphic design and branding

  • Advertising and marketing

  • Animation and digital media

  • Architecture and interior design

  • Web and app design

  • Game and interactive design

  • Industrial and product design

  • Illustration and concept art

Exhibitions and Real-World Experiences

Students showcase their work through:

  • The Pakenham Secondary College Art and Technology Exhibitions

  • Classroom and gallery displays

  • Excursions to galleries and ACMI

  • Artist talks and workshops

These experiences help students build confidence and understand how creative work connects with real audiences.
