At Pakenham Secondary College, Performing Arts plays an important role in helping students build confidence, creativity and collaboration skills. Through Drama, Music and performance opportunities, students are encouraged to express themselves, work with others and develop strong communication and presentation skills.
Our programs cater for all students — from those new to Performing Arts through to students pursuing specialist pathways in VCE and beyond.

What students experience
Performing Arts at the College provides students with opportunities to:

All students build core skills in Performing Arts through:

Year 7 Drama – focusing on expression, creativity and performance skills

Year 8 Music – developing understanding of performance, theory and listening skills
Students are also able to extend their learning through enrichment opportunities in our Passion Projects program, such as:

These experiences provide a strong foundation for continued study in Performing Arts.
Years 7-8 Foundations
Drama (Years 9-10)
Drama develops students’ ability to communicate ideas clearly, think creatively and collaborate with others. Students explore improvisation, scripted work and a range of theatrical styles while developing skills in voice, movement and character development.
Across Years 9–10, students:

Devise and perform original theatre works

Explore how performance reflects social and real-world themes

Attend and analyse live theatre productions

Perform for live audiences with increasing confidence
A key opportunity in the program is participation in the Malthouse Theatre Suitcase Series, where students develop and present original work in a professional theatre setting.
Music (Years 9-10)
The Music program supports students to develop as performers, composers and informed listeners. Students engage with a range of musical styles while building skills in performance, composition and music technology.
Across Years 9–10, students:

Perform as soloists and in ensembles

Compose original music using industry-standard software

Develop understanding of music theory and structure

Explore rhythm, melody, harmony and style

Strengthen instrumental and vocal technique
The program provides a pathway into VCE Music Performance and VET Music studies.

College Production
Students build on their skills through drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking and mixed media.
They develop ideas through experimentation, visual journals, artist research and the creation of finished artworks. Students also participate in gallery visits, workshops and the College Art and Technology Exhibition.
This subject encourages creativity, independence and confidence in developing personal artistic ideas.

Students work collaboratively to create and perform original theatre works in a professional Melbourne venue.
Victorian State Schools Spectacular
Selected students represent the College in a state-wide performance event involving large-scale dance, choir and production elements.
VCE Drama
VCE Drama focuses on the creation and performance of original and devised theatre work that communicates ideas, meaning and messages to an audience. Students explore a range of performance styles and apply contemporary drama-making practices to develop and present their own work.
Students engage in the full process of theatre-making, including research, devising, rehearsal, performance and evaluation. They develop characters and performances that transform time, place and perspective, often exploring social, cultural and real-world issues through drama.
Across the study, students:

Explore a range of performance styles and dramatic conventions

Perform devised work to live audiences

Analyse and evaluate their own creative process and performance outcomes

VCE Music Performance
VCE Music Performance provides students with opportunities to develop as performers, composers and critical listeners. The study focuses on performing music with technical control, expression and stylistic understanding, while developing a deeper awareness of how music is created and communicated.
Students perform as soloists and/or ensemble members on their chosen instrument or voice, and build skills in interpretation, musicianship and performance practice.
Across the study, students:
