As part of Pakenham Secondary College's commitment to delivering a rich, engaging and future-focused curriculum, all Year 7 and 8 students will participate in a Passion Project each semester. These projects are a timetabled component of the curriculum and are designed to support student engagement by allowing students to explore their interests and take an active role in their learning. The program aligns with the Victorian Curriculum capabilities, particularly in the areas of critical and creative thinking, personal and social capability, effective communication, problem-solving and collaboration.

What are Passion Projects?

Passion Projects provide students with the opportunity to develop transferable skills, pursue areas of genuine curiosity and strengthen connections with peers and staff through practical, hands-on activities.

Students are asked to indicate a first and second preference, as well as a back-up option, from the list of available projects.

While every effort will be made to assign students to one of their top two choices, some projects may not run if minimum numbers are not met, and others may fill quickly due to high demand. In these cases, students will be placed in their back-up option.

Full Passion Project descriptions can be found in the Year 7 and 8 Handbook - here.

Please note: Some Passion Projects may involve excursions that incur a small cost. Families will be notified in advance of any associated fees. Eligible families may use the Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) to help cover these costs.

How VET Works

VET programs are designed to prepare students for both further study and employment by linking learning directly to real industry contexts.

Students are assessed based on competency, meaning they must demonstrate their skills and knowledge in practical tasks, often completed in real or simulated workplace environments.

This approach helps students build confidence and gain experience in applying their learning in authentic settings.

How VET fits into Senior Schooling

VET is an important part of senior secondary pathways and can contribute to both the VCE and the VCE Vocational Major (VCE VM).

VET can:

  • Contribute credit towards VCE or VCE VM completion

  • Contribute to ATAR (depending on the program and study structure)

  • Be undertaken as an early VCE subject in Year 10

  • Provide a head start into senior studies and future pathways

  • Complement academic subjects with practical, industry-relevant skills

For example, a student interested in engineering may study VCE Mathematics alongside a Certificate II in Engineering to gain both theoretical understanding and practical technical skills.

Why study VET at School

Studying VET in a school setting provides students with a supportive environment while still gaining access to industry-standard training.

Benefits include:

  • Familiar school environment and support networks

  • Strong connection between teachers, training and wellbeing support

  • Nationally recognised qualifications identical to TAFE delivery

  • Direct pathways into further study, training or employment

  • Opportunities to build confidence and workplace readiness

VET allows students to explore career interests early while still keeping multiple senior pathway options open.

VET Mini Cluster Program

Pakenham Secondary College is part of a local VET Mini Cluster partnership between secondary schools, designed to expand access to a broader range of programs for students.

Participating Schools

  • Edenbrook Secondary College

  • Koo Wee Rup Secondary College

  • Officer Secondary College

  • Pakenham Secondary College

Purpose of the Mini Cluster

The Mini Cluster has been developed to:

  • Increase the range of VET programs available to students

  • Provide access to specialist training across multiple schools

  • Support alignment with local and national skills needs

  • Strengthen collaboration between schools in the region

VET programs available through the Mini Cluster vary each year depending on student interest, industry demand and provider availability.

Where VET fits

VET is part of the senior secondary learning program and can be included in different study pathways:

  • Students in the VCE Vocational Major are required to complete a VET program

  • VCE students may choose to include VET as part of their program

  • VET contributes credit towards senior secondary completion

  • Selected VET programs may contribute to ATAR calculations

Students who begin VET in Year 10 gain an early introduction to senior learning and a head start in their chosen pathway.

Why choose VET

VET is designed for students who want to:

  • Develop practical, job-ready skills

  • Explore career pathways while still at school

  • Combine hands-on learning with academic studies

  • Gain a nationally recognised qualification

  • Build confidence in real-world environments

Whether students are planning further study, apprenticeships, or employment, VET provides valuable experience and a strong foundation for the future.
